How to Host a Game Night: A Simple Plan and 3 Games to Play
A good game night doesn't need much planning: some food, a table everyone can reach, and games that get people talking. Here's a simple plan for hosting one, plus three games that keep the energy up from the first round to the last.
1. Set the Table Before Anyone Arrives
- Clear a big surface. Card games need room to shuffle, sort and slam a winning card down.
- Keep snacks off the play area. Put finger foods on a side table so the cards stay clean.
- Have the rules handy. Pull up the rules page on your phone so nobody argues about how scoring works.
2. Split Into Teams Early
Teams make game night better for big groups: quieter guests get backup, and the competitive ones have someone to high-five. All three games below can be played in teams.
3. Start Loud: CP Time
Open with something fast. CP Time uses a free companion app (iOS and Android) with a random countdown that can buzz anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds in. The app keeps score and can be mirrored to your TV, so the whole room watches the clock. It's the quickest way to wake up a room that's still easing in.
4. Get Everyone Laughing: Culture Canvas
Once the group is warmed up, switch to Culture Canvas, a drawing party game inspired by the African American experience. One player sketches while their team guesses before the sand timer runs out. You can use logos, arrows and plus signs, but no letters, numbers or talking. Challenge cards make it harder: draw with your eyes closed, switch hands every 5 seconds, or never lift the marker.
First team to the score cap wins. We recommend playing to 15. Culture Canvas rules
5. Settle It: Role Call
Close the night with the debates. Role Call: Blackbuster Edition is a movie trivia game that pays tribute to iconic Black cinema. The "finish the line" cards spark the best arguments, since the group decides whether an answer is close enough. For smaller crowds, the alternate rules turn it into a 60-second speed round.
6. Keep a Scoreboard
Track wins across all three games and crown an overall champion at the end. Bragging rights last until the next game night.
